This essay addresses the question “ how are place and self related.” The word place is inevitably related to home for me. Home is the place where we are born, grow and live. It is safe to say everyone relates to home in some degree. Although we often talk about different places, I think home is the most intimate and familiar place. Therefore, we should definitely discover more about home and its relationship to us.
In the passage I am going to write, I will engage the theme of home by relating it to my own, and my friends, personal experiences. I think everyone can relate to the word home, but everyone has a unique set of experiences that they associate with home. Therefore, I want to use the experiences of different people to discover how both place and home are related to us. In addition, I will quote and reference Tuan and Price’s opinions to illustrate and enhance my topic, the specific definition of place and home. A tentative title of my paper will be “ What is home?”.
Everybody has home where they grew up and lived. It inevitably has a huge influence on all of us. It is not an exaggeration to say home is the most intimate and familiar place to all of us; home plays very important role in everyone’s self-development process. Therefore, talking about how place and self are related, the first thing I think of is home. It is quite important to all of us because we all have a home. We should explore how home is related to all of us and discover what role it plays in all of our lives.
The questions I am going to answer are the following: what does home mean to us, how does home affect us and influence our self development, and what can be called a home exactly? In Patricia L.Price’s Place, he talks about home and how he believes home is the site of our most intimate relationship with place and experience. I think Price and I share a similar idea on what a home is.
For this assignment, I will not write the typical five-paragraph essay. To begin, I will introduce and explain the main topic, or thesis, of my essay. Next, I will address the first question of my essay, which is “what does home mean to us”, and relate that not only to my own experiences but also to the opinions of scholars and writers. Then, I will address the second question, “how home affects us” through the experiences of my friends. More specifically, here I will elaborate on the definition of home by referencing the opinions of various authors, including those who wrote the assigned readings. Finally, in the conclusion I will summarize the definition of home and its relationship to place.
